On the 4th May, 2018 at the European office of the UN Environment Program in Geneva, a working meeting of the Regional Director for Europe Jan Dusik and the Governor of the Irkutsk region, President of the International Association of Lake Regions Sergey Levchenko was held.
Sergey Levchenko, the initiator of the Baikal International Ecological Water Forum in Irkutsk, invitated Mr. Dusik to the shores of Lake Baikal and told about the Association's short-and long-term projects to improve the ecology of lake regions. In the dialogue with Mr. Dusik, he discussed the cooperation of the international Association of lake regions and the UN-environment Program in the following areas: environmental education; combating all forms of pollution; assessment of ecosystems and biodiversity; monitoring of the state and quality of water; management of sustainable development of lakes; creation of Green economy of lake regions.
Mr. Jan Dusik expressed his appreciation for the achievements of the Association of lake regions achieved in such a short time, and gratefully accepted the invitation to participate in the Second Baikal International Ecological Water Forum. This event will be held in Irkutsk in September 2018. The UNEP Regional Director for Europe also suggested:
- to support the initiative of the Association for "Floating Universities" by reporting it through the UN specialized Global education Program;
- support the idea of creating a national GEOPARK in the Irkutsk region;
- actively cover the activities of the Association within the UN.
Yan Dusik noted the importance of the activities of the Association of lake regions as a platform for the accumulation and transfer of experience in the protection and development of water resources of Lake Baikal and other lakes in Eurasia. He assured that UNEP was ready to assist the Association in mobilizing international partnership and to participate in joint projects.
Jan Dusik expressed hope for the success of the joint international action "Clean shores of Eurasia", dedicated to June 5, which the UN declared the day of struggle with plastic. He noted the control of this polluter as a particularly important area in cooperation with the Association and expressed the readiness of UN Environment to actively participate in the preparation of the Green Economy project for the coastal cities and settlements.
