“…on the first day God created the Earth. He looked at it and realized how untender it was. He worried – will The Erath hold a resentment for this. And so he gave it the best he could – Lake Baikal”.

This is the legend about the creation of the unique lake. Due to its enormous size, it is practically impossible to perceive all the richness of Lake Baikal.

However, upon visiting the Baikal Museum, located in a village called “Listvyanka”, in only 65 km from Irkutsk, you will have the opportunity to see many interesting exhibits. These will convince you in the uniqueness of the flora and fauna of the deepest fresh-water source in the world. In the museum, there are 17 thousand exhibits in total. They are landscapes of reliefs and landscapes of the Baikal region, mineral samples, fossils of ancient animals and many more.

The “living” exhibition of the Museum consists of 11 big aquariums with 20 different species of fish, 5 kinds of crustaceans, 3 sponge species, 2 kinds of shellfish and the Baikal seal.

On the surrounding territory Dendrological Park is located. There are rare endangered species of plants and diverse coastal landscapes.

Tourists may do a virtual diving to the bottom of Lake Baikal in deep-sea submersibles or watch the Baikal seal’s rookeries on The Ushkan Islands in real-time. It would be fascinating!
